Death and Dying

Casting ResurrectionAs you might expect, if you're facing an enemy whose sword rips through the mortal flesh of all those he opposes, there is the risk that your character might some day succumb to his/her wounds and die.

At HeroQuest we certainly don't have a death quota, but it is normal for there to be a couple of deaths on any event - and this is much higher on the 6-day Quests, which are intended to test your heroism to the full.

Resurrection

However, we realise that not every death might be the one your character deserves (no-one wants to be permanently slain by the giggling goblin that leapt out from the undergrowth).  Because of this, each character is able to be resurrected a number of times, so that you can carry on playing that particular character.  We hope that all characters will have the opportunity to die in a heroic manner at some point in their career.

All characters can be resurrected four times.  This number can be increased by a number of in-game ways:

  • if you swear fealty to the King of Rol-Farantir - King Paullandiss -, you can be resurrected a further time (i.e. gain an extra "res chance")
  • an artefact retrieved from the first Crusade (known as "Moragar's Inheritance") allows you to gain another res chance with extra adventuring experience (for every 1000 points your character accumulates)

It can also be increased out-of-character if you monster a sufficient number of events, e.g. monstering for the whole of one 6-day Quest can give you one res chance.

Tending

Casting Resurrection

Sometimes after combat, a character may be at death's door, on the verge between life and death due to his injuries.  (Technically speaking, your character has gone "below zero life", but only just).

What happens here depends on the actions of his comrades: if they are able to quickly rush to his side, tend his wounds and and speak to him, then they can potentially draw him back from the brink and into the world of the living.

If however, combat rages around him and nobody sees him until it's too late, unfortunately he may succumb to his wounds.

There is an in-character "law" that you may not cause harm to other characters by action or inaction, and so - if other characters are in a position to assist a dying character - then they must try to do so (on penalty of their own death).  This means that - no matter how much various characters might not get on with each other - if they can help you stay alive, then they must.

The player-ref will monitor the situation and advise you on whether your character dies or starts to recover.
